URGQ Marine Clean-up Dive

Are you sick and tired of seeing lost fishing lines, hooks, sinkers and nets, plastic wrappers, bags and cigarette butts while diving?

Come and help URGQ clean up the Gold Coast Seaway!

Brisbane SAC Organiser: Rich Hallett

URGQ have received a grant from the Qld Government to carry out marine clean-up activities of some popular Qld locations. This is Brisbane SAC's opportunity to assist in providing a safer and healthier environment for all marine life and to make some new friends in URGQ and Unidive. This will be the first of many clean-up activities around SE Qld over the next two years.

The information below is from the Vice President and Dive Officer of URGQ and provides further details of the activities planned for the day:

The first clean up dives under the new grant are scheduled for Sunday the 25th of March at the Gold Coast Seaway.

The plan is to carry out (3) dives if time and tide permits.

Where: Muriel Henchman Park

When: Sunday the 25th of March at 7am

Low water: 9.10am

High Water: 2.47pm

The first dive will be a shore based dive with Boat cover from Diver 1. The aim is to conduct an Emu parade through the Anchorage Basin that lies to the North of Muriel Henchman Park. The aim is to form a line and swim South to North collecting any rubbish and debris we encounter along the way.

For the second dive I thought we could have a look around the Octopus houses, and the Northern Rock wall of Wave Break Island.

The Third dive will be along the Northern Rock wall of the Seaway on the last of the incoming tide. Diver 1 will drop divers in at the mouth of the seaway and then provide surface cover while the divers drift along the wall collecting debris and rubbish.

I have extended an invitation to both Uni dive & BSAC to join us. If they are keen to get involved Uni dive will do the same as the URGQ on the South wall, using their Boat as cover. While BSAC conduct a shore based dive along the Pipes and rock wall with boat cover from a private vessel.

The compressor will be available for air fills and a BBQ lunch will be provided.

Regards

Paul Harrison

Help will also be needed from shore based, non-divers to collect debris above the water line and sort and record collected debris. So bring your families and friends too and don't worry if you would rather not dive!

Please be aware that there is a pool session at the Sleeman pool on the same day. Both the events will be starting at approximately the same time but the pool session can be finished by 11:00am. Members are more than welcome to attend both events but please indicate if this will be the case or not in the comments field when registering for both. Thanks.
